CoSADIE - Collaborative Sustainable Astronomical Data Infrastructure for Europe

WP3 Coordinating technical activities and defining the technical needs to maintain the VO framework

WP lead: Keith Noddle (UEDIN)

WP Objectives

This Work Package coordinates the technical activities of the European VObs teams and evaluates the activities and funding required to maintain the VObs technical framework (interoperability standards and VObs tools and portals) on the medium term.

Description of Work

This Work Package is managed by the WP lead, UEDIN, assisted by the Technical Working Group. Task 3.4 is led by INAF. There are several aspects in this activity: analysing requirements gathered from WP2 in terms of technological development, coordinating and analysing the expertise and activities of the European VObs teams and their role in the international landscape, and the evolution of the International Virtual Observatory Alliance.

  • Task 3.1: Analysis of requirements from the user and provider communities.
  • Task 3.2: Coordination of the European VObs teams and analysis of their expertise and activities. This task has two aspects:
    • Task 3.2.1 will organise “Technology Forums” to gather the European VObs teams which participate in the development of the European VObs. These forums aim at exchanging information on and coordinating the European technical VObs activities, discussing the activities relevant to the development of IVOA standards and preparing the IVOA Interoperability meetings by coordinating if possible a common European strategy. Three “Euro-VO Technology Forums” will be organised during the project.
    • Task 3.2.2 will analyse the domains of expertise and activities of the European VObs teams, to determine the long term needs.
  • Task 3.3: Assessment of the evolution of the IVOA.
  • Task 3.4: Liaison with the grid and cloud (INAF). This task will analyse the areas of commonality and complementarity between the VObs and the distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs), i.e. the international grid and cloud initiatives, and particularly EGI and the OGF.

  • Task 3.1: Analysis of requirements from the user and provider communities. This task will analyse the requirements provided by the scientific and data centre communities to determine the technical effort that must be sustained on the long term to maintain the VObs framework and tools and the associated organisation and costs, by participating in the preparation of the events organized by WP2 (D2.1 – M9 , D2.2 – M15 ) and attending these events, and by analysing the documents produced by WP2. These requirements will be discussed in the European Technology Forums and in the IVOA context to evaluate the required development work (new standards and tools and evolution of the existing ones).
Three “Euro-VO Technology Forums” will be organised during the project, two during the first year (D3.1-M5, D3.2-M12) to gather information and requirements, and the third one (D3.4-M23) during the second year to continue coordination and to gather feedback.
    • Task 3.2.2 will analyse the domains of expertise and activities of the European VObs teams, to determine the long term needs. Each partner will provide relevant information on the national VObs teams and potential evolutions. Participation of the European teams in the IVOA activities and its foreseen evolution will be assessed in Task 3.3 reports.
  • Task 3.3: Assessment of the evolution of the IVOA. This task will cover participation in the IVOA “Interoperability meetings” (M7, M13, M19, M25), to make sure that European requirements and expertise are taken into account and to assess IVOA evolution. This evolution will be taken into account in the evaluation of the needs of technical sustainability at the European and national level, included in D3.5.
  • Task 3.4: Liaison with the grid and cloud (INAF). This task will analyse the areas of commonality and complementarity between the VObs and the distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs), i.e. the international grid and cloud initiatives, and particularly EGI and the OGF. It will be focused on determining the technical effort that must be sustained on the long term to allow interoperability between the DCIs and the VObs framework and to allow the implementation of VObs standards on top of DCIs middleware, wherever relevant and convenient. This will be achieved by participating in the IVOA-OGF Liaison Group and contributing to the preparation of the events; by liaising with the A&A HUC (Heavy User Community) active within EGI, to identify specific areas where technical work is necessary to allow EGI-VObs interoperability; by actively participating in OGF (M6, M11, M16, M18, M24, M27) and EGI general and technical forums; and by preparing documents to be shared between the project and the DCIs. These methodologies for VObs-DCIs interoperability will be discussed in the Technology Forums and in the IVOA, and will be included in D3.5.

Deliverables

  • D3.1) First CoSADIE Technology Forum: Discussion of European VObs development activities, of European collaborations on the development of standards and tools, and of a common European strategy for IVOA. [month 2]
  • D3.2) Second CoSADIE Technology Forum: Discussion of European VObs development activities, of European collaborations on the development of standards and tools, and of a common European strategy for IVOA. [month 7]
  • D3.3) Mid-term report on European participation in IVOA: This report describes the European teams’ participation in IVOA activities, and evaluates their role in the IVOA, based on the first year Interoperability meetings. It includes an evaluation of the medium term evolution of IVOA and its consequences on European participation. [month 12]
  • D3.4) Third CoSADIE Technology Forum: Discussion of European VObs development activities, of European collaborations on the development of standards and tools, and of a common European strategy for IVOA. [month 23]
  • D3.5) Report on technical sustainability: This report describes the elements which have to be put in place to reach technical sustainability for the Virtual Observatory in Europe, with an evaluation of activities and required work force at the European and national levels, and of the articulation between these two levels. It will be used as input to WP5 activities. [month 17]
  • D3.6) Final report on European participation in IVOA: This report updates D3.1 with the second year IVOA meetings, as input to WP5. [month 22]
